Exhibit: Siouxland Artists

Siouxland Artists, Inc.: serving Siouxland for three quarters of a century!

The Siouxland Artists have been promoting art and artists by:

* encouraging and supporting each other’s artistic growth

* providing visibility for their art at local and regional venues

* participating in community art events and working on cooperative projects such as the Alley Art project in Sioux City

* exposing members to other regional artists, new forms, styles and techniques

And so much more!

We meet monthly in Sioux City on the first Tuesday of the month. Membership entitles artists to participate in our yearly juried show, holiday and other local art shows, and creative retreats and workshops. Anyone with an interest in art is welcome, including all skill levels and art media. We can be found on Facebook, and at our new website siouxlandartistsinc.com!

A reception honoring the artists will be held on Friday, June 4 from 5:00-7:00pm.

All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Exhibit: An Encaustic Link by Jenny Bye

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have painted in watercolor, acrylic, oil, but the medium I am most connected to is encaustic. The process of painting with beeswax and demar resin holds my attention for hours at a time.  It is a very physical, mysterious, and exciting medium to work with.  Not knowing what will happen next, what that next scrape will reveal, fuels my need to create.

It is my hope that my paintings show this feeling of mystery, intrigue and excitement.  A visual engagement and interaction of sorts.  By organizing elements and building layers of wax I strive for a sense of movement, balance and a state of harmony.

When in my studio, I listen to music and draw from conscious and innate examination of past and current thoughts and feelings. Working quickly to capture energy and spontaneity in the hardened wax, I fuse layer to layer then scrape into them unveiling the structure beneath.  The addition of collage materials is an intricate and fragile process adding dimension and interest.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jenny Bye is a Sioux Falls based artist and has been painting in this technique for twelve years. She uses beeswax, damar resin, dry pigments and collage elements that are fused into layers, variously added and scraped away.

Jenny Bye grew up in Lincoln Nebraska and Sioux Falls and has lived in and worked in Wyoming, Montana and Iowa. She studied art at Eastern Montana State University in Billings, Montana and has a Bachelor’s of Science from South Dakota State University.

Before relocating to Sioux Falls seven years ago, Bye was the education coordinator at the Sioux City Art Center. She has had solo exhibitions at the Sioux City Art Center, the Sioux Falls Arts Council, JLG Architecture Firm and Eastbank Art Gallery. Her work has also been published in the Briar Cliff Review (2016, 2017 and 2019).

A reception honoring the artist will take place on Friday, May 7 from 5:00-7:00pm. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Quilt Trunk Show with Jen Shaffer of PBJ Patterns

Originally from SW Minnesota, Jen began her quilting journey in 2002. Twelve years later, she published her first pattern “Pinwheel Pizzazz”. Now, she has published over 20 patterns in various magazines including Fons and Porter. While keeping her designs beginner friendly, she leans toward traditional piecing with a bit of modern flare. Her true passion lies in enjoying each step of the quilting process, and she is always excited to help new quilters find that same enjoyment of the craft!
