ARTIST STATEMENT

I have painted in watercolor, acrylic, oil, but the medium I am most connected to is encaustic. The process of painting with beeswax and demar resin holds my attention for hours at a time.  It is a very physical, mysterious, and exciting medium to work with.  Not knowing what will happen next, what that next scrape will reveal, fuels my need to create.

It is my hope that my paintings show this feeling of mystery, intrigue and excitement.  A visual engagement and interaction of sorts.  By organizing elements and building layers of wax I strive for a sense of movement, balance and a state of harmony.

When in my studio, I listen to music and draw from conscious and innate examination of past and current thoughts and feelings. Working quickly to capture energy and spontaneity in the hardened wax, I fuse layer to layer then scrape into them unveiling the structure beneath.  The addition of collage materials is an intricate and fragile process adding dimension and interest.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jenny Bye is a Sioux Falls based artist and has been painting in this technique for twelve years. She uses beeswax, damar resin, dry pigments and collage elements that are fused into layers, variously added and scraped away.

Jenny Bye grew up in Lincoln Nebraska and Sioux Falls and has lived in and worked in Wyoming, Montana and Iowa. She studied art at Eastern Montana State University in Billings, Montana and has a Bachelor’s of Science from South Dakota State University.

Before relocating to Sioux Falls seven years ago, Bye was the education coordinator at the Sioux City Art Center. She has had solo exhibitions at the Sioux City Art Center, the Sioux Falls Arts Council, JLG Architecture Firm and Eastbank Art Gallery. Her work has also been published in the Briar Cliff Review (2016, 2017 and 2019).

A reception honoring the artist will take place on Friday, May 7 from 5:00-7:00pm. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
